Ash Wednesday

“Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return…
Remember that you are dust, and to dust you will return…
Remember that you are dust…

The priest moves from one finite being to the next, touching foreheads and whispering the ancient words that mark this day.

Unlike any other day, today, Ash Wednesday is the day we remember our finite-ness in the presence of an infinite God.
We remember that we came from dust, and one day, to dust we will return.
We remember that our lives are fleeting.
We remember that God is not.

Today, unlike any other day we bear ashes on our foreheads
in the sign of the cross.
We are dust.

Today, we are called to look at the ways we distract ourselves and forget.
Today, and tomorrow…and for the next forty days–we remember.
We heed the call to return,
and to remember.

I will not forget You.

Wonder: Clyde Kilby

Recently I came across the words of Clyde Kilby, beautiful soul and professor of English at Wheaton College from 1935 to 1981.

He was a lover of words, of nature, of beauty–and a true lover of the Creator of all things beautiful.

While he wrote down 12 suggestions for living a life of wonder and integrity, I happen to be stuck on the first one. More may come later…but for now, there is something profound about staying here, for me–and maybe for you too.

At least once each day I shall look steadily up at the sky and remember that I, a consciousness with a conscience, am on a planet traveling in space with everlasting mysterious things above and about me.

Be blessed in your wondering this week.

Mary’s Song: Luci Shaw

Mostly, I think about Mary during advent. Maybe because she, aside from her holiness and purity, is the person in the Jesus Story I can relate to most. Contemplating her position of fear, submission, awe and wonder and worship all mixed in with this unique experience of carrying God–once you get inside her skin, it is very…
Well, I can’t, get inside her skin.

But Luci Shaw did. And she brings heaven to earth here inside this meditation. Luci is a Christian mystic, an author of several books, a poet, and a 1953 graduate of my alma mater, Wheaton College.

Mary’s Song

Blue homespun and the bend of my breast

keep warm this small hot naked star

fallen to my arms. (Rest…you who have had so far to come.)

Now nearness satisfies

the body of God sweetly.
Quiet he lies

whose vigor hurled a universe.

He sleeps

whose eyelids have not closed before.

His breath (so light it seems no breath at all) once ruffled the dark deeps

to sprout a world.

Charmed by doves’ voices, the whisper of straw, he dreams,

hearing no music from his other spheres.

Breath, mouth, ears, eyes

he is curtailed who overflowed all skies, all years.

Older than eternity, now he is new.

Now native to earth as I am, nailed to my poor planet,

caught that I might be free,

blind in my womb to know my darkness ended,

brought to this birth for me to be new-born,

and for him to see me mended

I must see him torn.

Advent Evening Prayers: December 7-12

Advent Evening Prayers are designed to center our thoughts and hearts on the mystery and beauty of the advent season. Based on the first two chapters of Luke, Advent Evening Prayers are meant to be read out loud at the end of the day. Each prayer begins with a scripture followed by a responsive reading. For each reading, you will need a bible, two or more people, and an open heart. We hope you are blessed as you take a moment each night this season to reflect on the wonder of Christ coming to the earth.

subsequent readings will be posted on December 12th and December 18th.

Leader: We know that you are sovereign. You are powerful. And nothing is impossible with you. We understand you might include us in your powerful mysterious plan some day.

People: May we welcome your heavenly announcements into our souls, into our minds, into our daily lives.

People: My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.

Leader: Since that night long ago in town called Nazareth, all generations call Mary blessed because she said yes!

People: We join with her, proclaiming: the Mighty One has done great things for us! Holy is his name!
Leader: His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.

People: He has performed mighty deeds. He has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.

Leader: He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.

People: Lord, help us to be humble.

People: Lord, help us to be hungry for you and not full of ourselves.

Leader: He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to those who trust in Him.

Leader: Come, Lord Jesus!

People: We open our hearts to you.

Leader: Lord, tonight we celebrate those who participated in your divine plan to bring Jesus to us.

People: We thank you for John who prepared the way for you…and for his faithful parents who followed you and obeyed you.

Leader: Teach us Lord, about how we might participate in your divine plan!

People: As Elizabeth was confident to give John his name, Lord, we pray for the same confidence to speak your truth. As Zechariah was patient, Lord, we pray for the same steadfast resolve to hold our tongue when it is not time to speak.

Leader: We thank you for the way you speak and the words you give us. Heighten our senses, again Lord, to discern your voice. Teach us to fear not when it is our time to speak of your promises and your truth.

Together: Lord we trust you. As we look back with thanksgiving, we honor the way you moved and worked through your saints two thousand years ago. We join the saints of the ages tonight and give you permission to move us into your divine way tonight. Amen.
